South India was always home for actresses who couldn’t make a mark in Bollywood. The Tamil and Telegu film industries, along with their Kannada and Malayalam counterparts, offered quality roles to the Bollywood discards. These films helped them resurrect their careers and come back to Bollywood, bigger and stronger. A fine example in this regard would be Genelia D’Souza. She flopped big time with her Hindi movies like ‘Tujhe Meri Kasam’ and ‘Masti’. She hit the South and did meaty roles in some blockbusters. Soon she was back in the reckoning and after ‘Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na’, she’s a big name in Bollywood now.
The reverse is not true really. South Indian actors and actresses have always found the going tough for them. Other than some legendary actresses like Sridevi, Hema Malini and Rekha, very few Southie heroines could make a mark in Bollywood. Actresses like Priyamani and Trisha Krishnan have done some movies in Mumbai, but they were mainly bit roles where the male leads took the cake away. Established actresses from the South rarely make it in the big bad world of Bollywood. Their accent is one drawback, so is their grammar of cinema. They are more used to loud acting nuances, something that is labeled at Over-the-Top in Bollywood.
However, South Indian actresses, who have not done any films down there, generally find a footing in Bollywood, if they are good enough. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is a stellar example. She started off with Mani Ratnam’s ‘Iruvar’. Without the baggage of being a Southie heroine, she debuted in Bollywood. The rest, as they say, is history. Shilpa Shetty did some South Indian movie as well when she felt that her Bollywood career was not taking off anywhere. South Indian actresses are known for their feminine grace and exceptional beauty. They are great dancers and generally breathe a lot of mystical oomph. With the right roles, they can achieve a pan-Indian following.
