You can trust Aamir Khan to back only those projects that are unique, fiercely creative and packed with substance. Debutant director Anusha Rizvi’s ‘Peepli Live’ is no different. It’s an exquisitely made satire on modern India. You have to give it to Aamir for producing such a film. There are no known faces, except that of veteran actor Raghuvir Yadav. There are no catchy numbers to ensure the music pulls in people to watch the film. This film is as real as it gets. Kudos to Anusha for directing a film that speaks of maturity in craftsmanship, vision and concept.
‘Peepli Live’ is the story of a farmer named Natha (Omkar Das). He and his elder brother Budhia (Raghuvir Yadav) are at their wits end trying to pay off a loan and salvage their ancestral lands. Finding no means to do that, they decide to take the advice of a local politician. The government pays a hefty sum of money to the farmer’s family when he commits suicide. Natha decides to end his life for the money so that his family can pay off the loan.
This news is carried in a local newspaper and then the media circus comes to town. Natha and his family members are hounded at all times by breaking news-hungry media-persons. There is an avalanche of TV cameras and reporters in this nondescript, poverty-ravaged village of India. Everyone wants a bite of the action, propelling the villagers into a mindscape they have not explored before.
The fresh cast of ‘Peepli Live’ brings the movie alive. The rustic music and the sepia-toned cinematography, picture-perfect art direction and a script that is a class-apart makes the film a delight to watch. After the critically acclaimed ‘Udaan’, this is one movie you must not miss. This is food for -thought that every Indian and movie-lover must relish.
