If you are someone in tinsel town, you must be on Twitter! But singer Sony Niiigaam (not a typo, that’s Sonu Nigam’s surname after numerological implants!) became the first celebrity who booted Twitter out of his life. Sensing that he had to be on Twitter to be connected, Sonu learned that you cannot be on the micro-blogging site unless you have a sense of humor.
Pictures of Sonu at a concert in pigtails prompted a barrage of derogatory remarks. It didn’t go down the supple throat of the songster. He promptly tweeted that people in India don’t understand the “madness” of a singer! He decided to take his profile down and let his staff handle his profiles on Facebook and other websites.
Sonu, who is known to make dragging speeches at award ceremonies, is on a low in the last couple of years. His contemporaries have run past him, leaving Sonu to lick his wounds. The Twitter spark may be just what the doctor ordered to get him back on the headlines. Sonu’s tirade went as far as to vow that he won’t allow his son to be a singer in India because people were not appreciative enough!
He also took a dig at how actors get away with anything. He repeats himself here. He made it sufficiently clear at numerous stages of his career that he didn’t like the step-motherly treatment that singers got when a song became a hit. He always grudged the recognition actors got out of a good song.
To get his due, he tried acting, but burned his fingers with flop movies like ‘Love in Nepal’. His fans would be greatly obliged to find him where he belongs: belting out semi-classical and head-banging numbers with equal élan. But Sonu has other plans, it seems! One of his final posts on Twitter read: “Next time I’ll appear naked at a party. Let the media cope up with that.”
