The concept of globalization has touched the world of cinema in a big way. In the last few years, many actors have crossed the divide between Mumbai and Los Angeles. Some actors like Om Puri and Anil Kapoor, along with actresses like Aishwarya Rai and Mallika Sherawat, has crossed the Atlantic to do films in the West. But they have not been able to bag any A-list projects as such, except for Frieda Pinto who’s in Woody Allen’s ‘You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger’. The inverse is not true.
Hollywood beauties have always bagged big projects in Bollywood. For example, the Spanish beauty Barbara Mori grabbed the huge Hrithik Roshan starrer ‘Kites’. She played the lead here and the producers were so keen on having more of her that they ruthlessly sniped out desi actress Kangana Ranaut’s role! The PR machinery even plugged stories of a torrid affair between Hrithik and Barbara to build the hype over the onscreen pair. But nothing could save the movie from tanking.
Others from the West didn’t have it so tough. Alice Patten played the lead opposite Aamir Khan in the blockbuster ‘Rang de Basanti’. She sizzled in the role and earned rave reviews for her performance. Aamir happened to be lucky for another Western import, Rachel Shelley. She was Aamir’s leading lady in his Oscar nominated movie, ‘Lagaan – Once Upon a Time in India’. But these are the only notable works that these Hollywood actresses could do here.
There were cameos played by actresses like Denise Richards in ‘Kambakht Ishq’ and Kylie Minogue pranced around in the disastrous ‘Blue’. Salman Khan tried his hand at the firang babe thing with ‘Marigold’ but his lady love in the movie, Ali Larter, could do nothing for the movie. The trend looks promising but for these Hollywood actresses to do well in Mumbai would need a good script. The hype over importing a Hollywood actor onboard seems to stifle that!
