Freida Pinto has what seasoned actors in Bollywood don’t. She debuted as a female lead in a movie that went on to make box-office and Oscar history. She went on to sign more Hollywood projects than other aspiring actors in India who talk of projects that never take off. She acted in a Woody Allen film, something that the best in Hollywood would give an arm and a leg for. After all that, praise as an actor, other than international recognition, is coming her way.
Her work in the Oscar winning director Julian Schnabel’s movie, ‘Miral’ is being unanimously appreciated. The movie is the screen adaptation of a book about Hind Husseini by Rula Jebreal. Freida Pinto plays the central character of a 17-year old orphan in Jerusalem. Her character starts teaching the kids at the refugee camps. In the course of her activities at the camp, she falls for a political activist.
Freida Pinto gave the movie her best shot. She trained her accent to suit the character. She shot under not-so-pleasant situations in the heartlands of Israel. She attached a lot of emotional involvement to get into the skin of the character of a traumatized teenager during the 1948 partition of Israel and Palestine. The movie is set to release this September.
Freida Pinto has received a lot of positive feedback from the limited number of people who had access to the trial shows. People are talking about a possible Oscar for this young performer who’s riding on extraordinary luck since her debut. No one would admit that she played a central character in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. Yet, the exposure she got because of that one movie was enough to catapult her on the big stage of Hollywood. Filmmakers back home in India may not be convinced about her acting prowess, but her enviable CV, with ‘You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger’ with master auteur Woody Allen and now ‘Miral’, speaks for itself.
