You cannot do anything to keep Salman Khan away from controversy! Even when he’s playing by the book, things happen and you find him glaring down at you from the headlines. His advertisement for a mint chewing gum was pulled up by the Shiv Sena for being disrespectful to religion. The TV ad shows Salman getting ice-cream out of some cows after feeding them the chewing gum.
Shiv Sena activists in Amritsar are up in arms to protest against the ad. They are burning down Salman Khan’s posters and effigies. They want an immediate ban on the ad. The concept of the cow yielding ice-cream instead of milk has rubbed Shiv Sena the wrong way.
The spokesman of the Shiv Sena wing in Amritsar, Sandeep Kulkarni, told the media: “It’s an insult to Hinduism. There are 100 ways of making an ad, without playing with the sentiments of the Hindus. We will continue our protest till the ad is removed.”
In response to the allegations of the Shiv Sena, the man who made the ad, famous Bollywood lyricist and National Award winner Prasoon Joshi, termed the protests as “bizarre”. He told the media: “I respect religion and I’m a very religious person myself. I don’t see anything controversial in the ad. The real cows which are aging need more help than the fictional ones.” The man in the eye of the storm, Salman Khan, is shooting in the Maldives. He has been mum as of now.
The Shiv Sena has a love-hate affair with Bollywood. It had stalled the release of ‘Wake Up Sid’ because the characters mention Mumbai as ‘Bombay’. It was only after Karan Johar landed on the doorstep of the Shiv Sena scions that the matter was resolved. Incidentally, it was Uddhav Thackeray’s birthday yesterday and industry biggies like Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan paid for ads in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamna’ to wish the leader!
