It all started with columnist Shobhaa De panning the big-bucks earning ‘I Hate Luv Storys’ in her newspaper movie review. With many of the movie journalists and critics offering favorable reviews to the film, De’s comments stuck out like a sore thumb. Soon, the director of the movie, Puneet Malhotra, tweeted a rather nasty and personal comment about De: “Guys pls don’t take Shobhaa De seriously. Shobhaa De is a fossil going through menopause. She doesn’t get action (sic).”
Sonam Kapoor, who received the more unpleasant comments on her character and performance in the movie, threw her hat into the ring. She rejoiced at the tweet from the director and retweeted it on her Twitter page. Shobhaa De didn’t take too kindly to that. She wrote in her columns that star kids who make such personal attacks on public forums have dysfunctional upbringing and don’t show signs of “good breeding”.
She cited the examples of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and how they maintained a dignified silence even as their movie ‘Raavan’ got shredded by every movie journalist. She also mentioned how Rakesh Roshan and his son Hrithik kept mum even as people took potshots at their latest high-budget no-show, ‘Kites’. De asked “these immature spoilt filmy kids” to learn from Karan Johar who defends his work, but with characteristic style and charisma.
Sonam Kapoor’s public apology comes in the wake of Anil Kapoor’s insistence. His amicable association with Shobhaa De goes back to some decades. He didn’t take it well that De tagged Sonam as a badly brought-up child. He insisted that Sonam tweet an apology to De. Sonam tweeted: “Mrs De I owe you an apology for getting personal. I am ashamed for my momentary lapse in judgment. And apologetic. Every writer and journalist and audience is entitled to her opinion and I respect that.”
